Bart Shigeru Uchida born in Vancouver,Canada moved to the USA in 1982. He has been creating work in the U.S.A., Canada, Europe and Asia since 1972. Originally a sculptor in wood and stone, his work has evolved to include mixed media, large-scale installations, community and public art and performance collaborations. He shares his time between New England States & Cordoba, Argentina.
Don Ramey earned a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1985 with a major in sculpture and minor in drawing, after previously studying engineering at the US Coast Guard Academy and Cornell University.
"I have devoted my time and energy to the making of Art whether it is my own or someone else’s; Fine Art or architectural ornamentation. My personal work is primarily figurative and primarily in stone, with an emphasis on sensuous forms and finishes. It is the act of making, the process of creating something beautiful from ordinary natural materials that gives meaning and satisfaction to my life."
Carol Driscoll is a sculptor and Director of The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland, Vt.
Kevin Donegan is a prolific young artist living and working in Vermont. He has explored a variety of mediums over the years, from acrylic painting to environmental installation, but began sculpting stone in 2008. Having already developed an affinity for working stone in his professional career as a mason, he was instantly comfortable with the subtractive process of carving, and found he had a natural talent for finding energetic form within rock.
Charles Austin grew up in North Clarendon, Vt and a workshop at The Carving Studio inspired further study at The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. After graduating, he went on to complete an apprenticeship with Koike Mitsu Nori at Hanoki Studio in Japan and later worked at The Johnson Atilier in Mercerville, NJ. In 2000, he decided to return to Vermont and chose to make his home and studio in West Rutland. Translating his carving skills into a trade, he works as a mason and enjoys the creativity it allows him.

Excerpts from the West Side
A personal note...
The town of West Rutland once ranked among the global marble industry. There is a vast history of an expansive market that has since faded into the background. Visiting the area today, one can see the result of a decades-long commitment by many hands, to fostering a worldly sense of community around utilizing industrial materials for creative purpose. Rather than moving toward commercialism, one can see the area shifting toward creating international and regional bridges across art communities.
My first experience with the art scene in West Rutland was visiting the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center with my family in the early 90’s. Although I was only 10 years old at the time, my mother, an artist and designer, became quick friends with several local artists and we began to frequent the art openings there. The discussions and activity happening on site inspired in me a great appreciation for sculpture, performance and installation; and instilled a curiosity about the artistic process. It was at the Carving Studio that I developed the portfolio that earned me acceptance into SMFA in Boston.
The artists and art enthusiasts I met in the West Rutland and Rutland area continue to be life- long friends, mentors, colleagues and a source of inspiration. I hope to share a bit of my appreciation for the art and community of people connected through the Carving Studio and the West Rutland area with the Burlington community.
